Campus News - on a positive note . . .

The SF Chronicle's Paul McHugh did a very interesting piece today on the Stanford ('the farm') open spaces, trails, history, etc. - with another great map (CLICK! pic to enlarge). Back in the day, Lance Keimig and I had travelled back in toward the SETI (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence) dish, to photograph at night - quite a hike with tripods, gear, etc.! - haven't been back down there in years. I would be interested in finding out if anyone has been back there at night recently, say post 9/11?

Tim,

Unless things have changed very recently, I don't believe you can get back to the SETI telescope, nor any of the land that is visible from 280!

A few years ago, the open space haters at Stanford put a fence around the entire Stanford hills plot of land. Access is only permitted during daytime hours from the northeast side of the hills. There's a fence that runs along the entire ridge of the hills keeping visitors on the side of the hills away from 280. From the edge of this fence you can see the SETI telescope, but I don't think you can get to it.

It's too bad. I photographed the "big scope" around 1999, but haven't been able to get back that far since. Also, the 280 side of the hills have some of the best lone oaks that I've ever seen anywhere in the Bay Area.
